So What Are The Main Causes of Stress?
There can be many different causes of stress -- from physical (such as perceived danger) to emotional (such as worry over a loved one or worry over your career or job.) Identifying what may be causing you stress is often the first step in learning how to better deal with your stress. Some of the biggest causes of stress today are: Worry and Internal Stress This is one of the biggest stress causes that affects just about everyone; worrying about things for no reason at all or worrying about things you can do nothing about or have no control over. Internalising negative feelings emotions and thoughts has a detrimental effect on your body, mind and health. Click here to see how you can even become addicted to this kind of stress. Fatigue and Overwork All work and no play as the saying goes… If you don’t have balance in your life and continually overwork and feel fatigued, stress will build and take a hard toll on your body. This kind of stress builds up over a long period of time and can be caused by working too much and not taking enough “me” time to relax and regenerate or recharge your batteries. The Fear Response and Survival We spoke earlier about the "fight or flight" response and the chemicals your body releases to provide you with the energy and strength needed in any perceived dangerous situation. Your body wants to keep you safe at all costs and naturally responds with a burst of energy and strength so that you can stay and “fight” or run and take “flight”. It doesn’t have to be a life threatening situation for your body to respond this way. If you have certain fears – going for a new job or starting at a new school or college, presenting your ideas to someone or a group, if you’re afraid or anxious about an upcoming event, or if you’re uncomfortable in social group situations -- your body will respond in exactly the same way because at some level you don’t feel safe. Environmental Stress There are also outside environmental factors that can cause stress such as pressure from school, work or family, crowds and loud noise. Even pollution, the chemicals in the air you breathe and the food you eat, along with poor diet and eating habits can take a toll on you and your body. The above causes of stress will affect your body, mind and personal performance. The next thing to look at is the symptoms of stress and ways to manage stress in your life so you don’t end up sick.
