EFT FAQ
There are always questions for new people to EFT so I have put together a list of EFT FAQs, the most frequently asked questions for you below. If you have any questions that aren't answered here, please let me know.
Why does the setup focus on the negative?
In EFT we focus on the negative or the problem because before any change can take place, firstly it’s important to acknowledge you have a problem and give it a voice, rather than pretending it doesn’t exist and focusing on the positive in the hope that it will go away.
Everything we do revolves around emotion and feeling.
If you're feeling bad but pretending everything is ok straight away you have set up an internal conflict. So the first step in releasing negative emotions to help you feel better is to acknowledge the problem or give it a voice. Then the emotional intensity can be diffused quickly and efficiently with EFT.
If you're having trouble identifying negative emotions I have included a list of emotions to help you here.
Once you're at an intensity of 3 or below you can then install a positive or a choice statement. The problem with doing it the other way around, i.e. being positive and repeating affirmations on a daily basis is that under the surface or on the subconscious level you know it’s not true. It will take a lot of motivation and positive input to effect any significant change and in the majority of cases it simply doesn’t work and can have the opposite effect... People begin to think there’s something wrong with them because they’re doing all the right things but nothing is working.
How do I know what to say?
Listen to your words. What are you saying to yourself and how are you feeling about the problem or issue? Remember emotion and feeling is everything. When you're feeling bad you're off track and when you're feeling good you're on track. Write down what you're thinking and then use those words, combined with any emotion and feeling to put into a set-up phrase. You can then clear it with EFT.
If you're having trouble check to see if this list of emotions will help you.
What do I say if I'm not comfortable saying "I accept myself"?
Self acceptance is something everyone struggles with at some point, so the standard EFT setup “Even though I have [this problem] I deeply and completely accept myself" can be uncomfortable for some people to say. If this is the case for you, try saying "I want to accept myself" or "I'm open to being able to accept myself" or "I accept this conflict".
How long do the results last?
Generally speaking, if you work on an issue with EFT and can no longer think about it or bring up any emotion and feeling, it is gone forever. BUT you can always be triggered again by an aspect that was not dealt with when you worked on the issue with EFT. It doesn’t mean it didn’t work. It just means there is more work to be done -- another aspect has surfaced -- so just take care of the new aspect with a few more rounds of EFT.
I did EFT on an issue and felt worse afterwards. Why is that?
An issue is a bit like a puzzle and can be made up of many different pieces or "aspects" which can sometimes be a bit like stirring up the muck on the bottom of the pond.Even though you might think it’s a negative, it is actually a positive because you have another "piece of the puzzle" to work with. So get the emotion and feeling up and out with a few more rounds of EFT to bring closure to it once and for all.
Are results due to either placebo effects or distraction?
I doubt it. Placebo effects require some belief in the process and most newcomers to EFT simply don't believe or have doubts that such a simple technique can produce such amazing results. EFT will not work if you're distracted and that's why a reminder phrase is repeated at every point to keep you "tuned in" to or focused on the problem.
