Stress Eating - Sweet Treats Compulsion Helped With EFT
It seems stress eating and sweet treats such as chocolates, cakes, biscuits and lollies (just great for the waistline) go hand in hand for a lot of people. Are there certain foods or sweets you automatically reach for to comfort you when you're feeling stressed and anxious?
I don't think there would be a person on the planet who hasn't found comfort in food and over-indulged at one time or another and then proceeded to beat themselves up about it.If you relate to this, I hope you find this case study helpful. This compulsive stress eating case involved a lady who was in the health and wellness industry. She joked that she was almost obsessive compulsive when it came to sugar and sweet things and asked me to bring the sweets for our session because she said she wouldn't be able to stop herself from eating them. In fact, her sugar addiction was so bad she always had sweets at work and at home and couldn't stop thinking about them, or "obsessing" as she put it. She said at times she had been so mad at herself for having no control and pigging out that she'd throw them in the garbage only to pull them out later to eat. This made her so angry she put the rest through the muncher so she couldn't eat them.
Using EFT For Addictions And CravingsWe started with a breathing exercise first and then tapped on the intensity of her craving to eat the sweets which was a 15 out of 10 :) We also worked on a number of different aspects such as taste, texture and how it made her feel. It's important to reassess the intensity with each round and also check to see if anything else came to mind even if it doesn't seem related. Her craving was down to about a 5 when she had a flash of herself as a little 5 or 7 year-old. Her parents had a shop and in the afternoon that's where she would go after school. There was no one to look after her and she felt alone but found comfort in "pigging out on sweets". We then worked on the memory and associated feelings of this and when we finished she had no desire for the sweets at all. I telephoned her a couple of days later to see how she was feeling and she said the bag of sweets was on the desk and had been for 2 days. She said she hadn't had the urge to eat one sweet, despite the fact she was renovating her business premises which she found stressful.
Stress Eating TipsCan you remember a time in your childhood where you were feeling bad about something that happened and a well meaning mother or friend insisted you eat something nice to make you feel better? Or perhaps some other incident came to mind for you as you read through this case study on stress eating. If it did, that's an opportunity to clear something that may be holding you back in some way, so try applying EFT to that memory and all the associated feelings.
